We Bear the Tide, We Brace the Ocean
An installation that serves as both a lyrical tribute and a forceful confrontation, shedding light on silent struggles and deep reflections. Inspired by my decades-long journey with fibroids and delving into the experiences of Black uterus-havers, the installation explores themes of pain, liberation, and embodied cognition, offering a poignant narrative that transcends conventional representations. Through a blend of literal and figurative imagery, the installation presents diverse reproductive journeys, amplified by a video component that amplifies the voices of depicted women, unraveling a historical narrative of neglect and exploitation of the Black female form. AI-generated creations redefine beauty while historical texts bridge past and present, anchoring the narratives within the broader context of life's cycles and the enduring spirit reflected in humanity and nature's interconnectedness.
Hosted at The Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine's Diboll Gallery, amidst a backdrop of public health innovation and Louisiana's historical context, the exhibition serves as a catalyst for reflection and dialogue, inviting audiences to bear witness to the ocean of stories within Black uterus-havers, fostering nuanced discussions and deepening the intersection between art, health, and community.
